Evelyn C. Torres (Marlene) passed away on April 24, 2021 with her loving family by her side, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. She was 83 years old.
Marlene was born Evelyn McKinney on April 16, 1938 in Sturgis, South Dakota. When she was a child, her family moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where she met and married John Torres. The couple moved to Texas in 1953. They had three children: Marlena Torres Morandi, Juan Arturo Torres, Arturo Raoul Torres. She is survived by her three children, seven grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. Marlene and John divorced after 23 years of marriage and though she never remarried she enjoyed a long-term relationship until the symptoms of her illness became to debilitating.
Marlene worked in the insurance business as a commercial property underwriter for many years. She also sold Mary Kay and Tupperware on the side to make extra money to provide for her family.
Marlene was very disciplined and organized and loved to tackle projects that most people (especially women) would avoid the quintessential do- it yourself, Marlene stayed busy by doing electrical, plumbing, painting, and general maintenance tasks on several rental properties she owned.
In her spare time, Marlene enjoyed sewing, gardening, oil painting, and bowling. She also loved to travel and go dancing. She was an active member of her church and always helping others in need. She will be missed by all who knew her kind and loving heart.
In Lieu of flowers please make donations in her honor to the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation.
