Obituary

On Tuesday, March 7, 2023, Frederick Hasselback passed away at the age of 74. Fred was born on May 20, 1948 in Owosso, MI to James and Loretta Hasselback. He received his bachelors degree from Central Michigan University in 1970 where he was a founding member of the Lambda Chi Alpha chapter. He also received an honorary diploma from Michigan State University in 1989. In December 1970, he married Melody and together they raised three daughters, Rachel (Nick), Leah (Nelson), Carrie (Nick), and son Jacob (Charity), and five grandchildren.Fred lived in Michigan nearly all his life and spent his final years residing in Perry. Fred was a veteran of the Navy having served two years at Great Lakes Naval Station followed by a 30+ year career working for the State of Michigan. Fred really thrived in his retired years when he began sporting Jimmy Buffet style shirts and dedicating afternoons to perfecting his napping skills. However, Fred's primary passion was supporting Michigan State University athletics programs where he was a season ticket holder to several sports and never and I mean NEVER missed a home football game. He also avidly supported the hockey program, holding season tickets for half a century and serving as President of the Blue Line Club for the 2006/07 national championship season. And when Fred wasn't at a game, he was attending a luncheon, a live-radio show, or a banquet that centered on MSU sports. He was always quick with a dad joke, loved a good deal, was a devoted recycler, and was loved and will be missed by his family. We will be celebrating Fred's life in a tailgate style gathering on Tuesday, March 21, from 2-4 pm at the Kellogg Center at Michigan State University. So don your best green and white, join us for a hot dog, and come share your favorite memories. If you can't make it, then we invite you to celebrate his life by doing something that he loved throw a tailgate, attend a game, or nap through a classic Western film.
