Obituary

SPARTA George Fay Sweeny, 72, passed away on May 25, 2015 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Jersey City and lived in Union City before moving to Sparta in 1976. He was a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. After college he worked for the Spanish and Greek National Railroads. George proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He received his MBA from Columbia University where he was president of the student body and a Roswell T. McRae Scholar. His Doctorate of Law is from Fordham University. Since 1981, he maintained a law practice in Sparta where he was the attorney for the Lake Mohawk Country Club for 33 years. George was an avid golfer, a travel bug and a member of the Les Marmitons Men's Cooking Club. He is survived by his loving wife, of 44 years: Margaret Hennelly Sweeny; beloved daughter Meave Sweeny of New York City; brother John Sweeny of Mahopac, NY; 3 sisters-in-law; Carol, Patricia, and Alana and 5 nephews: Raymond, Sean, James, Brian, and Patrick. Private services were held under the direction of the Goble Funeral Home, Sparta, NJ. In lieu of flowers please be kind to one another.
