Harold Winfred Twisdale, "Twis," age 89, passed away on Monday, June 27, 2022, in Matthews, NC. He was born on April 28, 1933 in Halifax, NC to the late James Robert Twisdale and Elma Smith Twisdale. Twis graduated from University Of North Carolina At Chapel Hill with a BS in Dentistry in 1955, and a DDS in 1958. He enrolled in the US Air Force in 1958 as a dentist with a rank of Captain, serving at Homestead Air Force Base. His dentistry practice spanned over 50 years. He was known by his patients as a caring dentist and treated generations of patients. Twis married Barbara Edmonds in 1958; they had one son, Harold W. Twisdale, Jr., and one daughter, Leigh Ann Twisdale Schumacher. The marriage ended in 1974. In 1983, Twis married the love of his life, Frances Jean Winstead Twisdale, and they enjoyed life together for 39 years. He loved to travel with Jean; together they visited many countries including Egypt, Italy, Panama, Germany, Russia, Israel, and many more. They had similar interests and values and supported each other in many ways. While Twis made his lifelong career in dentistry, he was also an entrepreneur. He particularly enjoyed his venture into broadcasting as President and General Manager of WCTU-TV in Charlotte and of WATU-TV in Augusta, GA, 1967 1970. He also loved to organize social events and created Gentil Elite, a social club for young professionals. Members enjoyed dances and many happy memories at local country clubs in the 70's and 80's. Twis founded the Southeastern Analgesia Society and served as its President, 1972-74. He founded the Metrolina Dental Society in 1994. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha and Delta Sigma Delta fraternal organizations. Twis was a natural at making others feel comfortable. He really listened and learned from other people. He was quick to make people laugh and had a host of stories for every occasion. He maintained contact with his 1958 DDS classmates and attended every reunion as he was able. He loved animals and created a sanctuary for the birds, squirrels, and small animals at his home, leaving food and fresh water at outdoor stations. His cats were his constant companions; Sadie and Sandy adored him and miss him. Twis's outstanding personality traits were love for God, family, and country, integrity, honesty, an excellent work ethic, intelligence, energy, compassion, and devotion. He frequently gave credit for these traits to his parents, whom he loved dearly. He was proud to be an Eagle Scout and a Jaycee. Harold is survived by his wife, Jean Winstead Twisdale, his children Leigh Twisdale Schumacher (Lukas), Harold W. Twisdale, Jr. (Karlanna), grandchildren Kendra Schumacher Davis (Luke), Jacob Schumacher, Patrick Twisdale (Cassie), Diane Garrison (John) niece, Ellen T. Stefura (John) niece. In addition to his parents, Twis was preceded in death by brother James R. Twisdale and sisters Mary T. Johnson and Hazel T. White. They were devoted to each other and stayed in close contact. Visitation will be held at Weddington United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 9, 2022, at 1:00pm, followed by a service at 2:00pm and burial in the church cemetery.
