Obituary

Joe Freeman Gilbert, of Falling Waters, WV, died on Thursday, January 14, 2021, at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, MD. He was 78 years old. He was born on May 9, 1942, in Pender County, North Carolina to Edgar and Geneva (Bland) Gilbert. He attended Sparrows Point High School in Edgemere, MD. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Darby out of Norfolk, VA. His career was in carpentry and as a millwright in Baltimore. At the time of his retirement, he was the president of the Millwrights Union.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Ina Lynas, his first wife Mary Lee (Adams), and his grandson Adam.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Margaret (Laing) Harlow; his children Michael (Pam) Gilbert, Amy (Darren) Graff and Amanda Mason; his step-children Wayne (Laura) Harlow and Jennifer (Paul) Sikorski; Fran Candeloro Jr.; his sister Mary Frances Streeter; 18 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was a loving husband, dedicated father, and wonderful “Grampie” who will be deeply missed. He was devoted to his Baltimore Ravens.
