Patricia “Pat” Evangeline Haltiwanger Manning, 73, peacefully transitioned to be with the Lord on May 13, 2020. She was born on August 9, 1946 to the late Samuel and Mable Haltiwanger in Newport News, VA into a family of four boys and seven girls. She was born and reared in Newport News, VA by her parents. She attended Booker T. Washington Elementary School and graduated from Huntington High School in 1964. She attended Nursing School at Morgan State University where she met her husband, Bernie Manning. She graduated as a registered nurse in 1967. On August 26, 1967 Pat was joined in holy matrimony with the love of her life, Bernie Manning. From this union, they were blessed with 3 lovely daughters: Tatonya, Monique, and Tamara.
After Pat and Bernie started their lives together, they resided in York, PA. This is where Pat began her career as a registered nurse. In the late 1960s, she worked briefly as a registered nurse at Pleasant Acres Nursing Home in York, PA. Pat and her family then moved to Harrisburg, PA, where she continued her nursing career in the Harrisburg Area School District. She was a school nurse there for many years. She was a loving and devoted mother and wife, and when her husband Bernie received a job opportunity in Pittsburgh, PA, the family relocated. Pat then became a school nurse in the Pittsburgh City School District.
Having a desire for lifelong learning, Pat decided to continue her nursing education and became a Nurse Practitioner. She loved comforting families who had lost loved ones, and this led her to study at Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science, where she became a licensed mortician. Pat’s parents reared her in the Newport News Gospel Spreading Church of God, founded by the late Elder Solomon and Mary Eliza Michaux. At age 4, Pat started attending Sunday School, taken by her older sister, Mable. From Sunday School, she went on to be active in all church activities: Sunday service, Junior Choir, Purity Club, and Young People’s Union. Pat continued with her serving spirit throughout her lifetime. When her husband was called to pastor, Pat was a true helpmate and again ready to serve.
She became a dedicated first lady at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church in the greater Pittsburgh area of Rankin, PA. In 2004, her husband was then called to pastor the St. John Baptist Church, Reading, PA, and Pat continued her first lady duties at St. John Baptist Church until the death of her husband. She oversaw the Women’s Ministry and was a member of the Mentoring Ministry. She had the gift to help, and she was embraced wholeheartedly with love from the church and the community for all her service.
After the passing of her husband, Pat relocated to live with her eldest daughter and her family in Waldorf, MD. She found a new church home at Christian Unity Baptist Church, where she served on the Pillars Ministry.
Pat was a proud Golden Life member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, where she was inducted in the Harrisburg, PA chapter in 1985. She joined the Tri-County (MD), Alumnae Chapter in 2018. Through the chapter’s community partnerships, Pat served as a reading buddy to students at the Dr. Samuel Mudd elementary school, where she positively impacted their lives.
She was an amazing wife and caregiver to her husband, of 50 years. She nursed him with special care and love throughout his illness, until his death in 2017. Pat also earned the title as “Family Nurse”. Her knowledge and research were a blessing to the family, as she was the” go to” health expert for many of her family members and friends.
Pat was truly a woman of faith who loved God and her family. She enjoyed family trips and gatherings with her daughters, grandchildren, sons-in-law, sisters, other family members, and friends. She was especially proud of her title as “nana “and had a special bond with her four wonderful grandchildren: Alexis, Amaiya, Jayla, and Justin.
