Obituary

William Dobyns Wornall, Jr. of Charlotte, NC, died unexpectedly on Saturday, July 23, 2022 at the age of 73. He was born in Charlotte on January 18, 1949, the son of William Dobyns Wornall, Sr. and Sybil Shufflebotham Wornall. Bill graduated from Charlotte Country Day School in 1968 and from William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri, where he was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Bill began his career with Piedmont Processing (Textiles Incorporated) in Belmont, NC. Thereafter, he began working for his father at Aldrich Machine Works, a family-owned textile machinery manufacturing business in Greenwood, SC. Upon his father's retirement, Bill assumed ownership of the business and worked in the textile machinery business until his death. He just recently sold his business to Judson Allen, whom he loved like a son. Bill was a passionate advocate for the American textile industry, and collected vintage postcards of the industry's mills, a collection recently on loan to North Carolina State University. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, the Piedmont Club, and Charlotte Country Club. Bill lived most of his life on the Charlotte Country Club golf course, where he enjoyed walks on the course and Wednesday night drinks and dinners with "the Deplorables", a group of cherished friends. Bill is survived by his wife of 47 years, Janet Wornall; his beloved daughters, Carrie Sexton and her husband, Zack of Charlotte, NC, Sybil Godwin and her husband, Bill of Charlotte, NC, and Louise Stafford and her husband, Cullen of Raleigh, NC; his adoring grandchildren, Elizabeth Sexton, Mary Margaret Sexton, West Sexton, Grace Godwin, Louise Godwin, Sybil Stafford, and Thomas Stafford. He is also survived by his sister, Roma W. Tison; brother, Al Wornall and beloved nieces and nephew. A memorial service will be at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte with a reception to follow at Charlotte Country Club, 2465 Mecklenburg Avenue. The service will be livestreamed at: www.christchurchcharlotte.org/funeral-live-broadcast/ for those unable to attend in person.
